In 2014, Tay Grin won a Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (BEFFTA) award for Best International African Act. In 2016, he won the BEFFTA Star Award in the music category and has since been a household name in Malawi.

Recently, after Trace Africa Television aired a music video he was featured on, the whole country went crazy because the tv show recognised him as South African instead of Malawian. Malawians immediately claimed that South Africa wanted to pull a heist of their most-loved musician and they weren't having it.

We can understand the confusion from the television show because he has travelled to South Africa on multiple occasions for work or pleasure. He even shot the video for ‘Chipapapa’, produced by renowned Malawian producer DJ Sley, which became an instant hit. The video was shot by South Africa’s innovative production company, Pilot Films, and will focus on a well-blended fusion of Malawi and Nigerian culture which the superstar rapper Nyau King believed would be out of this world. From Johannesburg, the Malawian hip-hop icon has also performed at Chancellor College, alongside the Black Missionaries and Skeffa Chimoto.

Tay Grin played it couy when the video for One More Touch, a song by Uganda’s Bebe Cool featuring the Malawian flag carrier, was played on the content provider and was indicated as a product by South African musicians. In reaction to the news, Tay only trivialized the issue.

One More Touch was unleashed in 2017. It is one of the noisy international collaborations involving the Malawian star. Tay Grin is also one of a few Malawian musicians whose songs air on international content providers, like his fellow musicians Gwamba, Fredokiss, and Zani Challe.

Luckily there have been no further attempts by South Africa and the nation has let the mistake go.
